Botulinum Toxin Type A

HOW DOES BOTULINUM TOXIN TYPE A WORK?

botox 01Botulinum Toxin is a purified substance that's derived from bacteria. Commonly known types of botulinum toxin type A.

Injections include Botox and Dysport.

Botulinum toxin A injections are used to soften lines creating a smoother more youthful, fresher appearance. So-called, hyperkinetic wrinkles, result from recurring contraction of the muscles of facial expression. Botox is injected into specific areas of facial muscles to limit their contraction. Consequently the overlying skin does not 'fold' or crease resulting in a smoothing effect.

We rely on our facial muscles to communicate our emotions through our facial expressions. The intention of a Botulinum Toxin Type A treatment is not an expressionless face. Whilst it is beneficial to soften lines It is equally important to avoid a frozen, unnatural appearance. My objective is to find a balance between these two.

The results are particularly gratifying when used in conjunction with a skin care program as a smooth, wrinkle free complexion, creates a picture of freshness and youth.

THE PROCEDURE

The injections take 5 - 15 minutes and are performed in the rooms. The effect takes 3-7 days from the time of the injection, and lasts for about 3-4 months. As it wears off one can see the specific muscles returning to their normal contracting ability. As there is no permanent muscle weakness, repeat injections are required to maintain this effect.

WHERE CAN I HAVE BOTulinum toxin type A FOR FACIAL REJUVENATION?

** Note: each treatment differs with respect to the dose and the exact site of injection, determined by your expectations and desires. These are discussed and assessed prior to treatment.

THE COMMON AREAS FOR INJECTION INCLUDE:

  1. Frown lines (corrigator muscle and occasionally procerus and the medial orbicularis muscle)
  2. Transverse forehead lines (Frontalis muscle)
  3. Crow's feet / smile lines (orbicularis occuli muscle)

I FREQUENTLY INJECT BOtulinum TOXIN TYPE A AT OTHER SITES FOR:

  1. Shaping of the eyebrow
  2. Elevation of the corners of the mouth
  3. Treating 'bunny' smile lines on the nose
  4. Treating an uneven, 'pot-holed' chin due to the mentalis muscle
  5. Treating nasal tip drooping when laughing or smiling (overactive depressor septi muscle)
  6. Prevention of wrinkles

A Botox treatment is often combined with a filler treatment or fat grafting.

BOtulinum toxin type A FOR SWEATING (HYPER-HIDROSIS):

Botulinum toxin type A is frequently used to minimize sweating in the armpits. Multiple intra-dermal sites are injected in each armpit, typically 50 units per side (100 units total). The effects last up to 6 months.

WHAT CAN I EXPECT AFTER THE PROCEDURE?

botox 02 A little redness and slight swelling can occur at the injected sites for up to 30 minutes. You can go about your normal daily activities immediately after the treatment however you should avoid exercise for 8 hours, avoid saunas or steam rooms, avoid rubbing or massaging treated areas and facials for two to three days after. Yogis should avoid headstands or inversions, until the following day!

COMPLICATIONS:

Bruising is the most common complication. This is more common in certain treatment areas e.g. crows feet, and in patients who bruise easily. Patients should avoid medications that thin the blood such as aspirin and non-steroidal anti-inflammatories for 2 weeks prior to injection. Eyelid ptosis (drooping of the upper eyelid). This uncommon complication usually lasts only a few weeks. During this period eye-drops can be administered to temporarily elevate the eyelid until the muscle recovers.
